THE
BOARISH KINGDOM
A Maine LARP
About
The Boarish Kingdom is a Maine-based LARP (Live Action Role Play) hosted by Zodiac Combat Sports. We aim to provide a fantasy setting based on collaborative, inclusive story telling.
Focused on Martial Arts, The Boarish Kingdom provides an exciting experience for players to expand their physical fitness and creative minds.
Each LARP session will be written as a “Book,” featuring hand-crafted characters and NPC’s. Participants can choose between two paths: Warrior or Mage.

-
Zodiac Combat Sports brings high quality martial arts training across New England. From weekly instruction, to hosting annual tournaments and workshops—Zodiac Combat Sports represents and honors the traditions taught by ancient Chinese kung-fu masters.
-
At any Zodiac Combat Sports LARP event, you can expect two things: a fun and engaging storyline and top notch, martial arts training. Our goal is to have every player leave with more martial arts knowledge than what they arrived with. We want to facilitate an exciting and safe themed atmosphere that celebrates creativity and art.
Additionally, we welcome players from all backgrounds! Whether you have never tried martial arts before, or have years of experience; we enjoy the collaborative storying telling that LARP creates.
We offer short & longsword training, guided meditations, and other martial arts concepts. Side quests & trainings are ways to level up your character and improve your own personal combat skills.
We plan on including archery in future events! For now, please leave your bow and arrows at home. When we have archery available, we will let our players know! When archery is unlocked, players may bring their own bow. When we train, just remember: the bow is not allowed to be used outside of the designated archery area.
-
The Boarish Kingdom is a country within our fantasy world! The story we create moves in and out of this area, and follows the trials and tribulations of our characters!
-
Zodiac Combat Sports does not provide food during these events. However, please feel free to bring snacks for your own needs.
Our healing potions (small water bottles) are available for in-game gold, however…
-
When going through the steps of creating your character, you have freedom to make yourself look however you would like. Of course, you’re not a time traveler from the future. This is set in the world of knights and dragons. You can take inspiration from The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, or even Disney princes and princesses. Have fun with your medieval fashion!
Because our age range is 12+, we ask players to be considerate with this in mind.
-
The Boarish Kingdom follows a continuing storyline that we post on our website! Books 1-5 are published on our social media accounts, but we “leveled up” and gained the ability to post on our site as a blog. Feel free to catch up on the story before your first event!

When you register for the event online, you will be directed to our character creator form. Take your time and add as much detail as you would like.
We kindly ask that you register and create your character at least 2 days before a scheduled LARP session.
Once you have created a character, you can play them in future sessions…so long as they remain alive…
-
Once you arrive and check-in at our LARP event, you become your character until gameplay ends. We encourage you to fully immerse yourself into medieval life! If you’re worried about not having any cool photos to show others, don’t fret! We have photographers onsite with their magical crystals to catch you in action!
(Yes, this is the nice way of telling you to leave your phone in the car for the weekend – we promise you’ll survive…actually, scratch that. You might survive but there is no promise your character will)
-
For all first-time Zodiac LARP players, you can use long swords or short swords. If crafting your own weapon, short swords are single-handed—meaning a handle of 6-8 inches with a blade of 22-32 inches. Long swords are two-handed weapons; thus, the handle can be up to 14 inches with a blade of 32-40 inches.
All swords must have a minimum of 1-inch-thick padding around the bladed area. All weapons much be evaluated during onsite check-in to test for safety.
Please note: We are not responsible for your weapon. If it breaks, we suggest you bring extra duct tape & foam to make repairs.
As for mages, we provide special, magical spheres for your character to use (They’re soft dodgeballs that can fit in the palm of your hand). If you would like to bring accessories for flavor, be our guest! But the magic we provide will be your primary attack and healing device.
-
For overnight LARPs: Bring bedding if you plan to stay the night (i.e., sleeping bag, sheets, blankets, pillow).
For day LARPs: Please wear comfortable shoes, as the day is full of walking, martial arts, and potential combat. For specific LARP events, we will always email players a list of additional clothing or equipment at least a day before a scheduled LARP. For weapons, please see above information. We ask you to please leave real, sharp weapons at home.
Bug spray, tick spray, & sunscreen are the only non-medieval items that we allow. Feel free to bring snacks for your own dietary needs. Backpacks, side packs, or fanny packs are always welcome. If you require personal medication, you are responsible for keeping that on your person in a safe manner. As always, we have a cleric (volunteer EMT) on standby!
Please use your judgment and feel free to email us with any questions!
-
Zodiac LARPs are smoke, drug, & alcohol free. If for no other reason than the sheer fact that we are swinging swords at each other in simulated fights; drinking and swords don’t mix (yes that goes for Viking style players too). Because we allow younger players, we do not allow the use of recreational drugs or smoking at these events.
Decide Your Character’s Fate!
Races
Like Dungeons & Dragons, Skyrim, or Dungeon Crawler Carl; players are allowed to choose a “race” in a Boarish Kingdom LARP! This means you can take on a fantastical persona and develop a rich background about the character you become. Popular options for race include: Human, Elf, Orc, Dwarf, & Halfling. However, we welcome all sorts of races in our LARPs! Play as a proud Dragonborn; a crafty Lizard-kin; or a vegan Shark-folk! Whatever your heart desires!
There are no bonuses in health points (HP) or skills because of a character race. We use race as a source of storytelling. Allow your choice to guide how your character looks, dresses, moves, and interacts with others.
Remember to have your attire be ACTION READY! You will be moving, running, fighting, & hiking throughout the day, so please dress accordingly.
Classes
In a Boarish Kingdom LARP, players have a choice between two classes: Warriors and Mages. As players level up, these classes branch off into powerful subclasses. Please review these classes to help guide your character creation:
